Introduction
In this lesson, your students will learn to derive the trapezoid area formula  through a hands on directed activity sequence that increases the understanding of area while developing the ability to solve problems involving the trapezoid.
Subject:  Geometry
Topic:  Area of Trapezoid
Grade Level: 9-12
Student Lesson name and URL:
Standards Addressed
Mathematics  9-12

8.0  Students know, derive, and solve problems involving the perimeter, circumference, area, volume, lateral area and surface area of common geometric figures.

Instructional Objectives                              return to top

Students will be able to:
1.  identify a trapezoid when looking at geometric figures.
2.  derive the formula for the area of a trapezoid by
  a) duplicating the trapezoid-forming aparallogram
  b) by dividing the trapezoid into two triangles.
3.  solve problems involving the area of a trapezoid.
