 Introduction

This lesson will focus on the differences between viruses and bacteria, with respect to growth and replication, the primary defense of the human body against them, and effective treatment of the diseases they cause.

Subject: Biology
Topic: Viruses and Bacteria

10d. Organisms have a variety of mechanisms to combat disease.  As a basis for understanding the human immune response, students know that there are important differences between bacteria and viruses, with respect to their requirements for growth and replication, the primary defense of the body  against them, and effective treatment of infections they cause.

Instructional Objectives

Students will:

  1. identify the different types of viruses
  2. compare and contrast the lytic and lysogenic replication cycles of viruses.
  3. compare and contrast eubacteria and archebacteria.
  4. explain the characteristics of bacteria.
  5. explain the reproduction of bacteria.
  6. explain the role of the skin in defending against viral and bacterial infection.
  7. explain the role of the immune system in defending against viral and bacterial infection.
  8. classify certain diseases as being virus-caused or bacteria-caused.
  9. explain symptoms and treatments of diseases that viruses and bacteria cause.
