Standards Addressed

Physics - Motion and Forces
1. Newton's Laws predict the motion of most objects.
   b. When forces are balanced no accelerarion occurs.
   f. Applying a force to an object perpendicular to the direction of its motioncauses the object to change
     direction but not speed.

Instructional Objectives

1.  Students will be able to explain how an airfoil shape produces lift.

2.  Students will be able to identify the control surfaces of an aircraft and explain the effect that each has on controlling the flight of the aircraft.

3.  Students will be able to identify which features of an aircraft's design determine its flight characteristics.

Student Activities

Introductory Activity

Students will view videos of aircraft in flight and examine model aircraft with working control surfaces.

Enabling Activity(ies)

Students will  research the principles of flight and the basic principles of aerodynamics, including Bernoulli's Principle and the relationships among the forces acting on an airplane in flight.

Students will perform several experiments to reinforce their research.

Students will construct model aircraft with working control surfaces.  Each control surface will configured individually and the models will be flown to determine the effect.

Students will research a topic of their choosing related to aviation  using the Internet and other available resources.

Culminating Activity

Students will be given a series of maneuvers for their model planes to perform and will configure the
control surfaces to perform each maneuver. Students will also  make a multimedia presentation on their research results.

Assessment
I.
A pretest will be given to assess competancy in the subject area prior to the lesson.  Results will not be used for grading purposes but will be compared to a post test to assess improvement.

Several labs will be done during the lesson and will account for 20% of the grade.

A presentation project will occupy the majority of the student's time. and will account for 60% of the grade. The presentation project will be assessed on the basis of -------------------------------------

A short-answer written test will be taken at the end of the lesson and will incorporate question from both the assigned work and the presentation made to the class.  This test will account for the remaining 20% of the grade.

An overall score of 80% will be considered mastery of the lesson.
