California Missions  were a key to the settling of California by the Spanish.

     4.  Describe the mapping of, geographic basis of, and economic factors in the placement and function of the Spanish missions; and understand how the mission system expanded the influence of Spain and Catholicism throughout New Spain and Latin America.

     5.  Describe the daily lives of the people, native and nonnative, who occupied the presidios, missions, ranchos, and pueblos.

Instructional Objectives

                       Students will investigate  California Missions in relationship to the settling of California. They will  choose, research and  create a "travel brochure" on the computer of a mission and present information to the class .

     1.  Students will choose a California mission .

      2.  Students will research that mission using the library, the internet, or any outside/personal resources available.. 

     3.  Students will organize information and answer the following questions:
                A.  When  the mission was founded?
                B.  Who founded the mission?
                C.  Where is the mission located in the state?
                D.  Who is the mission named after?
                E.  What are some interesting facts about the mission?
                F.  Why was the mission founded? 

      4.  Students will create a "travel brochure" on the computer about their mission. 

       5.  Students will present their "brochure "to the class.

Student Activities

The students will take a pre-test about California Missions.
The students  will choose a mission.
The students will research that mission using the internet, library materials, text book,  and any outside source available. 
The students will organize their information and create a "travel brochure" in the computer lab using their research information.

Introductory Activity:

The students will pick a number out of a basket. 
That number represents a Mission in California. 
This is list of Mission names the students will research.

Students take a pre-test about their mission.

Students will go to a web page about California Missions.
Students will click on their Mission number and read about that mission. 
Complete the template about their mission. 
Students may use other resources i.e..  internet web sites, the library, their textbook, any any outside source they may find.

Students will use their outline and the information they found to create a "travel brochure" about their mission.  They will then present their brochure to the class.
