Introduction
Our number one goal each year is to complete the year without any injuries to the students (and teacher) in the class.  We also want to complete the year without any damage to the tools, machines, and equipment in the classroom.
For these reasons safety is our number one concern each day when students are working with electricity and various types of equipment, tools, and machinery.
Each year, for our returning students, we start out with a safety instruction review.
Students taking the class for the first time will be given basic safety instructions on general safety at the first of the year.  They will be tested on this information upon completion of the unit.  As we introduce new equipment, tools and machines throughout the year we will include detailed operating safety instructions for the students.
Before a student will be allowed to use any equipment he or she must meet all of the following requirements:
1.  Pass a safety test with 100%.
2.  Observe a demonstration (given by the teacher)on the safety and use of      that piece of equipment, tool, or machine.
3.  Return a concent card signed by both the student and parent or guardian.

       2.  No damage (other than normal wear and tear)will occur to any machines, tools, or machines throughout the year.
      3.  Each student will be able to pass the safety test with a score of 100%.
     4.  Each student will demonstrate safe work habits throughout the year.
     5.  Each student will be able to properly operate the necessary tools, machines, and equipment to complete the assigned work for the year.

Student Activities
This safety unit will be done at the beginning of the year.  It will consist of the following items:
1.  Lecture on safety.  Presented on Power Point to the entire class.
2.  Demonstration on fire extinguishers and their use.
3.  Demonstrations on hand tools, machines, and equipment.
4.  Activities:
              student made safety posters,
              safety video,
              textbook readings,
              worksheets.
5.  Safety test review. Can be individually taken or a group review with Power Point.
6.  Safety test.
Results on test:
7.  100% on test:  Continue to next unit.
8.  Less than 100%.  Review mistakes, make corrections, retake test.

Introductory Activity
We ususually begin our unit on safety by giving the students a short talk on the importance of safety in the workplace, the home, and at school.  Newspaper clippings of various "rare" accidents are shared with them.  I will make the connection between their attitude and how it affects their work habits regardless of where they are working or playing.
We have the students suggest different things that affect their attitude and how those things might be potential accidents.  We discuss various techniques they might use to alter their attitude so that they won't become an accident waiting to happen.

Enabling Activity(ies)
1.  PowerPoint presentation which will provide all the safety rules we have and use in the class.  Students are to take notes while we go through these rules.  Examples will be given to illustrate the rules so the students will better understand.  They are encouraged to ask questions and provide personal experiences for the rest of the class.

2.  Videos are to be shown.  Students are to list 10 interesting facts for each of the videos shown.
Videos to be shown will be:
a.  "eye safety"
b.  "electrical safety"
c.  "DMM safety"
d.  "Safety in the workplace."

3.  Safety Poster:  Students are to select one safety rule from all of the examples discussed todate.  They are to draw a colored poster depicting that safety rule.  A simple design and minimal word usage is encouraged.  Examples of previously done work will be shown.

4.  Testbook Assignment:  The students will be directed to read the section in the classroom text pertaining to safety.  They will be given a worksheet to be completed that will coinside with the reading.

5.  Review safety test:  Students will be given a practice test which will contain most of the questions that will be on the final test.  They can work in teams of 2 or 3 while completing this test.  They can discuss each of the questions plus refer to their notes before answering the questions. It would be real helpful if this test was on the computer so that the students could get instant feed back with corrections.  If computers are not available a scantron answer sheet would be helpful.
After the students have completed their test there will be a discussion period to determine the most commonly missed questions.  Those will be explained again.  Other concerns can be discussed at this time because "THE TEST" will be given the following day.

Culminating Activity
THE TEST:  Each student will receive his or her own copy.  This test must be done individually.  They are to turn the test in for correction upon completion.  If they receive a 100% score-their done.  If however, the make mistakes they will have to make corrections on the missed questions and then arrange to take the test again.
