Introduction
In this lesson students are introduced to a wetland
ecosystem and then asked to research the diverse
organisms which live there. Students will analyze the
functions that each organism serves in this ecosystem. Ultimately students are to create a power point
presentation on the particular wetland that they
researched. Students will create a word processed
report, they will incorporate computer generated charts
and graphs, and they will use various research sources
found on the web.

(6) Organisms in ecosystems exchange energy and
nutrients among themselves and with the environment.

        c. Populations of organisms can be categorized by
the functions they serve in an ecosystem.

Instructional Objectives

  1. Students will identify, describe, explore and classify
the structural characteristics of a wetland ecosystem.
   2. Students will create their own wetland ecosystem
       model.
   3. Students will identify and describe the organisms
       which inhabit a wetland ecosystem.
   4. Students will examine and describe the function that
each organism serves in the ecosystem.

Student Activities

Introductory Activity
Students will participate in th Insect Observation activity. The objectives of this activity are for students to observe insect behavior and habitat; learn body parts and adaptations of insects; learn about insects' role and relationship to wildlife and humans.

 Enabling Activity(ies)

   Activity #1
Students in teams of two will visit the site:
   National Wildlife Federation/kids zone/cool tours
and create a chart to describe and classify
the structural characteristics of a wetland ecosystem.
They will then pick a particular wetland to study
in depth by researching the following sites:
The Environmental Protection Agency/kids/wetlands
Encarta Concise Encyclopedia Article
Nature Explorer
Wetlands International
U.S. Geological Survey

   Activitity #2
Students will create a model of a wetland ecosystem.

   Activity #3
Students will research the various organisms which
     inhabit wetlands by visiting the
     following sites:
CA Project Wild
National Project Wild
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Ducks Unlimited

Culminating Activity
  • Students will use their information to publish a word processed report. In addition they will create a power point presentation of their wetland ecosystem, describing the functions of the various organisms.
