(6.1.4) Calculate given percentages of quantities and solve problems involving discounts at sales, interest earned and tips.

Algebra and Functions
(6.2.0)   Students analyze and use tables, graphs, and rules to solve problems involving rates and proportions:

(6.2.1) Convert one unit of measurement to another.

(6.2.2) Demonstrate an understanding that rate is a measure of one quantity per unit value of another quantity.

(6.2.3) Solve problems involving rates, average speed, distance and time.

InstructionalObjectives

Students will be able to:

1) Understand rates in relation to monetary value within countries

2) Use multiplication and division of decimals to convert dollars to various currencies of other countries.

3) Estimate whether conversions are fair.

StudentActivities
Below is a summary of student activities.  To go directly to student page click here-student lesson web site .

Introductory  Activity

To prepare students for this lesson, they will need to be exposed to the differences between the United States and Europe in regards to currency, distance measurement and temperatures.  Give an overview explaining English pounds, French francs and Swiss francs.  Talk about how currencies can be considered strong or weak when compared against others.  (This can be shown more clearly in the enabling part of the lesson.)

Students also need to be familiar with what celcius and kilometers are.

If students are not familar with percentages of numbers, they will need to be exposed to that in order to calculate tips.

Enabling  Activity(ies)

In this part of the lesson, students will go through a travel diary where they will be converting money, distance and temperatures.

  CulminatingActivity

This is a differentiated lesson where high achievers will create a personalnarrative story from the perspective of Siddhartha Gautama's (Buddha's) life.  They will retell the story of his life as a child, and howheresponded to his father
