Introduction:
This lesson will introduce the concept of odd and even numbers
to second graders.  The lesson activities combine teacher led, whole
group and small group instruction with online activities that students
will complete independently.

         Content Area:  Math
         Topic: Odd and Even Numbers
         Grade Level: Second

2nd Grade Math Standards Addressed:
Number Sense
yyy1.0 Students understand the relationship between numbers,
quantities, and place value in whole numbers up to 1,000:
1.1 Count, read, and write whole numbers to 1,000 and identify
the place value for each digit.
Statistics, Data Analysis, and Probability
2.0 Students demonstrate an understanding of patterns and how
they grow, and describe them in general ways:
2.1 Recognize, describe, and extend patterns and determine a
next term in linear patterns .

Instructional Objectives:
     1. The students will be able to identify whether a given number
between 1 and 20 is odd or even.
     2. As a result of the teacher led extension activity, the students
will be able to identify whether any given number is odd or even.
     3. As a culminating activity, the students will demonstrate their
understanding of odd and even numbers by writing and illustrating
a page for a class book or  a class web page project.

Introductory Activities:
yii1. The students will take an online pretest to determine their
initial understanding of this concept.  The results are printable.
     2. The next activity is a whole class teacher led math lesson that
involves song and movement.  This activity will introduce the concept
that even numbers have partners, and odd numbers don't. The
students will work with manipulatives to build the numbers 1-20 in
twos.  They will discuss the patterns they see, and will use this
knowledge to predict and test whether other numbers are odd or even.

Enabling Activities:
The students will complete a series of activities online that will
help to build their conceptual understanding of odd and even
numbers:
      1. They will read an online story that demonstrates the
concept that even numbers have partners and odd numbers don't.
      2. Then they will interact with another  online story that
reinforces and extends this concept to larger numbers.
      3. Next, they will use their understanding of odd and even to
play a game at a commercial web site, in which they will build a
home for story characters.
      4. They will be challenged to identify whether large numbers
are odd or even at another commercial web site .
      5. To extend the students' understanding, you can choose from
several whole group and small group follow-up activities that can
be done indoors or outside as review or extension activities.

Culminating Activities:
       1. The students will complete an online posttest to measure
what they have learned.  The results are printable.
       2. To demonstrate their understanding of odd and even
numbers, the students will each choose a number between 1 and
20 to write about and illustrate for a class book on odd and even
numbers.  This can be done as a paper and pencil activity, as a
KidPix or other multimedia project, or as on online project, similar
to the story the students will read as part of this lesson.
