 Introduction
My name is Susan Glines-Thompson. I teach first grade at Martin Luther King, Jr. K - 8 in the Sacramento City Unified School District. I have been teaching for 14 years and have been teaching first grade for the past 5 years. I am so glad that we are finally teaching beginning reading using a systematic, comprehensive, phonics and standards based Language Arts program. Now instead of only 25% of the students reading at grade level by the end of first grade, 90 - 95 % of them are reading on grade level by the end of first grade. Before computers became my passion, I channeled that passion learning how to teach beginning reading. I can now get on with other things. I am a single parent of two wonderful girls, Shannon and Stefanie. They are my pride and joy of course and are my primary passion. They are both in college and working part time. Its been a long journey, difficult at times being both mom and dad with us all making sacrifices but together we conquered our challenges and have a special bond as a result.
