Introduction
Part of the World War II
unit is the study of the impact of the conflagration on
various minority groups on the homefront. Students will be
researching the impact on one of the four groups: women,
Hispanics, African Americans, and Japanese Americans, and
write a short research paper. Mixed student groups will then
created a display paper summarizing the experiences of each
group.

Student Activities
Introductory
Activities
- Review
roles of the various groups during the Great
Depression.
- Pretest
of students' knowledge about roles during the
war.
- Group
discussions about symbols in a Home Front
poster.
Enabling
Activities
- Students are assigned
to one of the four topics: women, Hispanics, African
Americans, and Japanese Americans. They will research
their topics from assigned readings and teacher
selected websites. Students will then produce short
research papers about their topics.
- Once the papers are
completed, students will be assigned to groups with a
member for each topic included. The group will create
a display paper about the general impact of the war on
the Home Front groups. Display paper is completed on a
large sheet of butcher paper and has accompaning
graphics.
Culminating
Activities
- Student groups will
create short quizzes for the entire class that might
be answered from the posted display
papers.
- Final assessment will
have questions about the activity findings on the unit
test.
