  • Students will be able to draw and identify the parts of a compass.
  • Students will be able to select appropriate reference points and determine bearings (plus or minus 5 minutes).

Student Activities

Introductory Activity (AKA Instant Activity)

Directional Foot Bag:

Set Up. Use cones to establish boundaries. Place foot bags by the follwoing directions that are posted in the learning environment:

  • Write a personal goal for today's lesson entitled Compass, Bearings, and Reference Points.
  • Get into groups of 4 or 8.
  • Select one person to get a foot bag. Other group members find space in the playing area to do the activity.
  • Groups of 4 get into in N,S,E,W  directions and groups of 8 get into N,S,E,W and also NW,SW,NE,SE directions (circle formation).
  • Pass the foot bag around the circle calling out the directional position of the person who are passing to or the person you passed to.
Note: If students are unfamiliar or not very skillful with a foot bag, use a soccer ball, Nerf ball, or throw balls to one another.

Enabling Activity(ies)

Introduction
Review directions (N,S,E,W,NW,SW,NE,SE) with students. Ask students to share personal goals.

Compass Parts
Go over the parts of a compass verbally and have diagram(s) posted in the learning environment for student reference. Pass out compasses and have students review the parts of a compassr cooperatively. Go over the parts of the compass again with students.

How to Use a Compass
Go over the sequence of skills needed to determine a bearing with the students step by step. Also have the following sequence posted in the learning environmment:

  • Turn dial to the desired degree.
  • Line up the needle with...

After a few trials of you (the teacher) leading the class through the sequence with randomly selected bearings (0-360 degrees), give students a bearing to see if they can go through the process on their own. Check for understanding by observing if students end up facing the correct direction or if students are able to do it themselves. Give students a few more bearings until most students appear comfortable with how to use a compass.

Activity I

Set Up. For this activity, place about a dozen markers around the field or gym. Markers will be lettered (A,B,C,...) or numbered (1,2,3,...). A great way to get markers for outside use is after election season when all of the placards lining the road need to be discarded. Help clean up your town by picking them up and if you turn the sign inside out, you will have two blank pages to write on along with a ready made stake. Make sure the letters or numbers are large enough to read from a distance and that the markers are at chest/eye level. Scatter 10 Polyspots in the "playing area" and determine the bearing from each Polyspot to each respective marker. It's very time consuming, but if you map the layout your work will be cut down significantly for future use of this activity again. Also make an Answer Key and and a Blank Worksheet for the students.

Activity Time. Have students complete Activity I cooperatively. Students will complete  by practice calculating bearings to specific objects or landmarks.    They will complete a worksheet by writing down the degrees of the bearing to
each object.

Assessment
IDiagnostic Assessment: Through discussion, determine the level of knowledge relating to a compass and directional references.

Formative Assessment: Are students able to determine general direction in relation to a fixed point?  Are students using the correct technique to
determine bearings?

Summative Assessment: Students will turn in their worksheets from the bearing exercise.  How accurate were their calculations?

Grading:  The worksheet on bearings will be worth 25 points.  A participation grade will also be recorded in the garbed.
