PENGUIN POPULATION

Print out a copy of this page and work the problems.

1. If the adult population of one colony of emperor penguins is 50,000 birds, you assume that half are female.

        a. Assuming that 90% of the females mated successfully and each laid one egg,  how many eggs were laid?

        b. All 90% of the females that mated transferred their eggs to their mates. However, eggs fell off the feet of 891 males and froze.  Later, 59 males lost their eggs in cracks in the shifting ice.  The rest of the eggs hatched.  How many eggs hatched?

2. Skuas, large birds of the antarctic, prey on emperor chicks and eggs, and account for one-third of their deaths.

       a. If 8,550 chicks die in a year, how many were killed by skuas?

    b. How many died from other causes?

3. Not all the offspring or young of an animal population survive to adulthood.  What would happen to the population if all offspring did survive?
