Student Activities

Introductory Activities

  • The students will take a pre-test on their knowledge of penguin nesting habitats, and the hatching and care of chicks using http://www.funbrain.com/quiz
  • The students will be shown pictures of penguin parents in their nesting habitats, and with their babies.
Enabling Activities
  • Students will be asked to compare and contrast the nests.
  • After a discussion on incubation, students will be asked to dramatize the Emperor penguin protecting the egg from the Antarctic weather. Students stand together in a circle, some on the inside, some standing around the outside.  When instructed to do so, the students on the outside of the circle will slowly make their way to the inside of the circle, and those on the inside will form the outer part of the circle.  When they walk, they pretend to have an egg on the top of their feet.  This will dramatize how the penguins protect themselves against the harse Antartic weather.
  • Students will complete the Penguin Population page.

Culminating Activity

  • Students will construct a penguin of their choice with the help of clay sculptor, Holly Irons.
