Introductory Activity

Teacher will flip through various pages in the book,  Martin Luther King Jr.  As a class, we will discuss the illustrations, and color content of the illustrations, and how they make the student feel.  We will also discuss why they believe the author used this type of illustrations in the text and identify the author's purpose for writing the story.

Enabling Activities

  • After reading the beginning of the story, ask students to identify the events that took place at the beginning of the story and write their responses on a chart with the heading "Beginning".   Students will also create a picture of Martin using colored tissue paper and using a picture of his face as an outline.
  • After reading the middle of the story, ask students to identify the events that took place in the middle of the story and write their responses on a chart with the heading "Middle."  You will select four students to role play the infamous Rosa Parks incident.  Characters include, Rosa Parks, bus driver, white passenger, and police man.
  • After reading the end of the story, ask students to identify the events that took place at the end of the story and write their responses on a chart with the heading "End".  The students will listen to an excerpt from the "I Have A Dream" through an audio link.

Culminating Activities

  • Students will produce a story map which identifies the characters, setting, and plot, as well as four major events in the life of Martin Luther King Jr.  These events will be illustrated along with 2-3 sentences describing those events.
  • Students will identify their favorite part/event in the story and will write 2-3 sentences describing this event as well as illustrate.  Students will read their finished product to the class.
