Introduction
Students will create a multimedia presentation on one of the many aspects of the New Deal.  The lesson is planned for eleventh grade students.  The lesson should take 2-3 days in a blocked schedule.  (One week in a regular class.)
Standards Addressed
This activity is designed to assist  students in meet ing: 

    SJUSD Standard Five  which states that students will analyze the social and political upheaval resulting from the stock market crash, great depression and the NEW DEAL.

    California standard 11.6  which states that students will analyze the different explanations for the Great Depression and how the New Deal fundamentally changed the role of the federal government.

 

Instructional Objectives

            1.  Students will identify the major causes of the great depression by correctly completing the Terms to Identify worksheet. 

            2.  Students will illustrate the depth of the great depression in America during the 1930's. 

            3.  Students will compare and contrast the economic and political philosophies of the presidential candidates in 1932 by writing a short essay on the topic. 

            4.  Students will summarize, then  analyze the successes and failures of the main features of the New Deal. 

            5.  Students will analyze the effects of the controversies that result from the New Deal and assess the main ideas of each of FDR's main opponents. 

            6.  Students will create a multimedia presentation on their specific topic.

            7.  Students will list and make sense out of web sites associated with their specific topics.   They will prepare a webliography for their project.
 
 
 
 

Student Activities

Listed below are basic outlines of the various activities that students will be doing during this exercise.  Links to the various activities are located in the Resources section of this page.
 

Introductory Activity
 

      Students will search the web for appropriate sites relative to their specific portion of the topic.

Students will complete the terms to identify worksheet associated with an overview of the timeline.


 
 


Enabling Activities

Students will locate specific web sites that contain information on their individual topics. 

 Students are to obtain documents, photos, interviews and primary sources related to their topics. 

Students will outline and complete a multi-media presentation on their topic related to the New Deal.
 
 
 


 Culminating Activity
In small groups the students will present their multi-media project, answer any questions and handout their worksheet on the New Deal.   Student groups are responsible for correcting their worksheets.
