Balance Poses
Students will learn a variety of balancing poses.
Each balance pose will be deifined by how many balance points have contact
with the ground. A balance point is an extension from the body that
provides stability and balance to a position.
Three Balance Points:
-
Knee Scale: Students will
be on all fours, with shoulders directly over palms, and hips directly
over knees. Extend one leg off of the ground so that is horizontal
or higher. The three balance points are the right hand, the left
hand, and one knee.
-
Tripod: Students will make
a triangle with their head on the ground as the point of the triangle and
the right hand and left hand as the right and left points of the triangle.
Then students will work to balance their knees on the platform created
by their elbow and upper arm. the three balance points are the head,
and the right and left hands.
-
Pre-scale: Student begins
with wieght on hands and feet, hips pointing up in the air. Then
the student extends one leg up into the air while keeping both hands stationary
for balance. The three balance points are the right and left hand,
and one foot.
Two Balance Points:
-
Froggy Hold: Studens will
begin by placing hands about shoulder width apart on the ground.
They will bend their elbows slightly so that a platform is created.
Slowly students will try to the right bent knee on to the right elbow,
and then the left bent knee onto the left elbow. The two balance
points are the right and left hands.
One Balance Point:
-
Arabesque/Scale: Students begin
in a standing position with arms extended to help stay balanced.
The student will extend one leg to the back. An arabesque is when the body
stays up right with the leg extended out, but still pointed down toward
the ground. A scale is when the upper body bends forward at the hip
and the back leg is extended out so that it is horizontal to the ground.
In the scale the body forms the shape of a T. The balance point is
the foot.
