                          Introduction
Students will understand the concept of perimeter by drawing a picture with the computer program Kid Pix. They will also become familiar with the computer program, Microsoft Works.  They will review the concept of perimeter by matting their picture and glueing a border around their picture.  They will then find the perimeter and area of their picture in centimeters and inches.

 Topic:Geometry

Standards Addressed
Mathematics Standard-Find perimeter of gridded squares and rectangles.
4th Grade

Squares and rectangles can be measured by adding all the sides together.  This is the perimeter.

As the basis for understanding this concept, students know:
          a) Two dimensional objects have boundaries
          b) These boundaries can be measured using
               appropriate units
          c) Students discuss the perimeter of a rectangular-
shaped object in the room (e.g.the chalkboard)
          c) Review of perimeter
  Instructional Objectives
  1. Student will be able to identify the following
  2. Perimeter- the measuring of the boundary that goes around the outside of things; sum of  all sides.
  3. Boundary- the border or limits of an object.
  4. Area-the surface included within a bounding line
  5. Formula- rule, equation or symbols to show a mathematical relationship.
  6. Length- how long an object is
  7. Width- how wide an object is
  Student Activities
Students will put make a 1/2 Quilt.  Students will become familiar with the art program, KidWorks.  They will design a picture from this program and print it.  They will then trace their picture onto 1 x 1 cm grid paper and count the number of squares all the way around (perimeter).  Then they count all the squares in the rectangle and figure out  area.  They will use the computer program, Microsoft Works to write a short paragraph describing their picture.  They will include the perimeter of their picture.  They will also review the concept of perimeter by playing a game online.
Introductory Activity
As a class we will discuss the math concept of equivalent fractions.  All students will be given an 8 x 8, one inch grid paper (perimeter=32 in.)  We will figure out the perimeter.  We will fold the grid paper in half and cut two 8 x 4 pieces.  We will determine the perimeter and discuss why this is now a rectangle (perimeter=24 in.)  Once again, we will fold the two 8 x 4 pieces to have a total of four 4 x 4 in. squares.  Students will color each 4 x 4 in. square to represent 1/2.  For example color 8 of the squares red and the other 8 are colored green.

Enabling Activity(ies)
 1. Discuss as a class how we can determine the perimeter if we put everyone's 4 x 4 in. squares together.
 2. Divide the class into small groups. Groups will determine the perimeter of putting their 4 x 4 in. squares together.
 3. Put all the student's 4 x 4 in. squares together and determine the perimeter.

Culminating Activity
Once students have become familiar with the art program Kid Pix, they will have them print out their picture.  Students will cut their picture to their desired size.  They must determine the perimeter of their picture. They will mat their picture on a piece of colored construction paper leaving a 1 inch boarder.  They will also need to cut a piece of yarn, trim, or strips of constuction paper to glue around their picture.

   Assessment
Final picture must show-
  1. Student used four or more features from the program, KidWorks.
  2.  Student wrote a short  paragraph describing his/her picture
        using Microsoft Word.

  3.  Perimeter of the picture was determined correctly.
