Introduction
The objective of this lesson is to give students an opportunity to demonstrate their comprehension of health concepts they've learned in class. This lesson will provide students a chance to practice their writing skills and also to exercise their computer research skills.
Subject: Health
Topic: Infectious, Non-Infectious, and Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Grade Level: 9th Grade
Student Lesson name and URL: Assessing Today's Diseases
Standards Addressed
The LAUSD/California State Standards this lesson addresses.
"Examine risk factors for susceptibility to major chronic and communicable diseases, including HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, and relate effective strategies for counteracting the effects of those risk factors"

Ninth Grade Health: Focus on Communicable and Chronic Diseases

What are diseases and how can they be prevented?

Instructional Objectives
  1. Students will be able to identify symptoms, prevention, and treatment of communicable and chronic diseases.
  2. Students will be able to demonstrate internet skills in order to research data to present this project.
  3. Students will be able to demonstrate basic research paper skills demonstrate by including in their typed papers a cover sheet, table of contents, and bibliography.
Student Activities

Introductory Activity

Students should choose one of the following diseases as the topic of their paper:

            Influenza                Pneumonia             HIV & AIDS

            Hepatitis B           Syphilis                   Tuberculosis

            Gonorrhea            Mononucleosis       Chlamydia

            Cancer                  Arthritis                    Diabetes

                                    Cardiovascular Diseases

Enabling Activity(ies)

Student must address all of the following issues in their research:

1) What is the disease and what does it do to the body?

2) What are the physical symptoms suffered by one who has the disease?

3) Who is most likely to get the disease? Have students address gender, age, ethnic, and regional inequities.

4) How many people die yearly from this disease? Also encourage students to include in this answer gender, age, ethnic and regional inequities.

5) How does one prevent getting this disease? Is a vaccine available?

6) Is there a treatment for this disease? If so, what is it, where can they get it, and what is the cost?

Culminating Activity

Students will present data collected in a typed report. Minimum requirements should include that the paper is 4-5 pages typed, has a cover page, a table of contents, and a bibliography. A minimum of three sources should be required, with at least of the sources coming from the internet. ( I usually give the students a handout on how to properly reference a bibliography)

Assessment

This project is worth 100 points.

Give a maximum of 15 points for the depth and accuracy of their responses to each of the six questions. ( 90 possible points )

Give a maximum of ten points for  presentation of the paper. Include in this assessment if student followed all requests of the assignment as well as neatness and presentation quality. ( 10 possible points)                                                                            [BACK TO TOP]
