Subject: Math
1.0 Students understand relationship between numbers and quantities (i.e., that a set of objects has the same number of objects in different situations regardless of its position or arrangement): 1.2 Count, recognize, represent, name, and order a number of objects (up to 30) As counting is an on-going unit of study in Kindergarten, this lesson is intended to be taught sometime in January through March. At this intended time of the school year (depending on the students' ability levels), you will probably be working on 1-20 with the numbers 21-30 being taught after this point.
Insert brief summaries of your introductory, enabling, and culminating activities. Insert links to online resources in your text and insert links to activities on your student lesson web site. Introductory Activity Before you begin this unit, pre-assess each student by using number flashcards, having each write the numbers in order, and asking them to count out numbers using manipulatives. Listen and Count activity: Have the students close their eyes and listen to the number of items dropped into an empty soup can. Drop some manipulatives into the can and have the students count how many they heard being dropped into the can. After you are done, have the students share their number guesses. Story Connection: Read Ten Black Dots by Don Crews. Have the students count the items on the page as you point to them.
