Instructional Objectives
As counting is an on-going unit of study in Kindergarten, this lesson is intended to be taught sometime in January through March.  At this intended time of the school year (depending on the students' ability levels), you will probably be working on 1-20 with the numbers 21-30 being taught after this point.
  1. While viewing number flashcards, each student will state the correct number name with 85% accuracy. (1-20)
  2. After using counting activities from the Internet, each student will circle the correct corresponding number symbol to represent the number of items represented on the worksheet with 85% accuracy. (1-20)
  3. Using manipulatives, each student will count out the correct number of items for the number symbol given with 85% accuracy. (1-20)
  4. Using KidPix or paper & stamps, each student will create a number book  with the correct number name written with corresponding number stamps with 85% accuracy. (1-20)
  5. Viewing another student's counting book, each student will evaluate whether the number of stamps and the number symbol listed are accurate. (1-20)
Student Activities
Insert brief summaries of your introductory, enabling, and culminating activities. Insert links to online resources in your text and insert links to activities on your student lesson web site.
Introductory Activity
Before you begin this unit, pre-assess each student by using number flashcards, having each write the numbers in order, and asking them to count out numbers using manipulatives.

Listen and Count activity:  Have the students close their eyes and listen to the number of items dropped into an empty soup can.   Drop some manipulatives into the can and have the students count how many they heard being dropped into the can.  After you are done, have the students share their number guesses.

Story Connection:  Read Ten Black Dots by Don Crews.  Have the students count the items on the page as you point to them.

Enabling Activity(ies)

Counting Games on the Internet

Manipulatives--counting, counting mats, animal counts,

Worksheets--circle and write the correct numbers for the corresponding items shown  worksheet

Number Books--read aloud number books like Over in the Meadow

Stamp Books--have the students stamp the number of items for each number in order 1, 2, 3...

Culminating Activity
The students will evaluate each others' Counting Books by counting each number and bookmarking any pages that need to have too few or too many items stamped for that number.

Have a food counting party to celebrate the numbers--they get to count out the number of items

Post-Assessment--Same as the pre-assesssment
