Introduction

This lesson explores the process seniors go through in the transition from high school to college. It will include college preparation, college applications, financial aide and a senior calendar. It applies to students who plan to attend either a 2 or 4 year institution.

The standards for this lesson were taken from "The National Standards for School Counseling " (American School Counselor Association).

1. Academic Development - Standard B
Students will complete high school with the academic preparation essential to choose from a wide range of substantial post secondary options, including college.  Students will:

  • identify post secondary options consistent with interests, achievement, aptitude, and abilities
  • use assessment results in educational planning
  • organize and apply academic information from a variety of sources
Instructional Objectives
  • Students will be able to differentiate the 4-year and 2-year college requirements
  • Students will be able to explain the application process for a 2-year college.
  • Students will be able to explain the assessment and  the placement process for 2-year college 
  • Students will be able to explain  the types of programs offered from a 2-year college 
  • Students will be able to explain the transfer process
  • Students will be able to attain the skills necessary to compile matching colleges and majors for themselves by using internet site
  • Students will contrast and compare the testing assessments available for 4-year colleges.
  • Students will be able to describe the application process  for 4-year colleges
  • Students will be able to explain the required Financial Aid process for both 2 and 4-year colleges
Activities

Students will complete a variety of activities designed to guide them through the college application process.  All of these activities will be placed into a portfolio.

Introductory Activity

Students will read essays by fellow students on the process of leaving high school and the experience of student's first year at college. Students will take the pre-test.

Enabling Activity(ies)- All activities become part of a college transition portfolio

  • Students will complete career/college search
  • Students will research UC a-g requirements and compare and contrast these with the student's classes
  • Students who do not qualify for a 4-year college or who are choosing a 2-year college will complete research on 2-year admission requirements and application process
  • Students who are choosing a 2-year college will complete the assessment preview online
  • Students who are choosing a 2-year college will complete research on the program of their interest
  • Students will preview SAT/ACT powerpoint presentation and complete related worksheet
  • Students will download and complete a college application
  • Students will download and complete financial applications
  • Students will hand  in completed college transition portfolio
Culminating Activity
  • Students hand in completed portfolio with final plan for senior academic transition. Students participate in group discussion of process.
  • Students will take the post-test
