Introduction
This lesson is appropriate for third grade level.  Students will begin observing the moon for a "hands on" experience introduction. As students begin to conclude that the moon goes through different phases further instruction and information will be shared.  Students will conclude with a slide show (Power Point, Kid Pix ) to share their knowledge and findings.

Standards Addressed

       Earth Sciences 

** Objects in the sky move in regular and predictable  patterns. As a basis for understanding this concept :

* Students know the way in which the Moon’s appearance changes during the four-weeklunar cycle.

Investigation and Experimentation

 Students will: 
* Predict the outcome of a simple investigation and compare the result with the prediction.

* Collect data in an investigation and analyze those data to develop a logical conclusion.

Instructional Objectives
  1. .Students will observe the moon via internet access over a period of one lunar month to determine how the moon changes over time.
  2. . Students will construct a moon journal of observations and identification of the phases throughout one lunar month.
  3. Students will design a slide show presentation showing and labeling the phases of the moon and giving interesting facts about the moon..

Student Activities

Introductory Activity

Teacher will read picture books such as Papa, Please Get the Moon For Me by Eric Carle or Moon Bear by Frank Asch. Teacher could read some myths or legends about the moon. Students will the participate in a  group discussion (KWL). 

Students will begin a moon watch observation log to be shared, updated, and evaluated at home and school.  This will involve actual observation and onlineweb site observation.

Enabling Activities

 Students will learn the names of the phases, observe the repeating pattern, and label their observation log diagrams accordingly. Interesting facts and information on the moon will be collected through textbook, resource books, and web sites research.

Culminating Activity 

Students will plan and design a slide show ( Power Point or Kid Pix) to show, label, and describe the phases of the moon (New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter Moon, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter Moon, Waning Crescent) Also included will be interesting moon facts.

Culminating Activity- Grand Finale!
Students and their families will participate in a "Night Sky Celebration" one evening at school.Telescopes will be set .up for observing the night sky. The computer lab or classroom computer(s) will be set up for the students to present their powerpoint/kid pix slide presentations to their families. The celebration will conclude with moon shaped cookies and space drink served by the students.
