Introduction
Students will be introduced to the concept of negative numbers by counting students present and absent. Other examples of negative numbers will be discussed. Students will learn to place negative and positive numbers on the number line. Students will graph temperatures with negative and positive numbers. Students will research negative numbers using internet links. As a culminating activity students will make a poster or written report explaining the concept of negative numbers.

Student Activities
I
Introductory Activity
Students will be asked to count the number of students present and the number of students absent. ( If no students are missing a few students could be sent outside.) The number of students missing can be expressed as a negative number. Other examples of negative numbers should be discussed. http://www.blarg.net/~math/negative.html A short history of the use of negative numbers will be given to the students.  http://www.maxmon.com/300bc.htm

Enabling Activities
1. Given negative and positive numbers including 0 students will be asked to form themselves into a number line.
2.On a worksheet students will be able to locate positive and negative numbers on a number line.
3.Students will locate positive and negative numbers on a thermometer. Students will be asked to record temperature readings in different locations (ie outside in the sun, in a refrigerator, inside a glass of ice water)
4. Students will graph temperature readings on a thermometer.

Culminating Activity
Students will create a poster or  written report explaining the use of negative numbers.

Assessment
Students will be graded on their final project. They will have a possible 100 points. Information possible 50 points. Overall neatness and presentation possible 50 points.
