Introduction       Ant Homes

Students will have the opportunity to learn in several curriculum areas while observing and watching the fascinating world of ants in their natural habitat.  This will be done under 3 different headings, with several lessons under each heading.

  • Students will become familiar with ant body parts.
  • Students will learn about ant behaviors and compare them to human behaviors. 
  • Students will create models of ants and an underground nest.
  • Students will simulate ant behaviors related to human behaviors through creative drama and cooperative play.
  • Students diagram the different life cycles of an ant.

Introductory Activity

  • Take students out for a walk to observe ants, anthills, and ant trails. (If you can't find ants, leave a board or something flat on dampened ground with a small piece of fruit, sticky candy, etc. to attract them.)

    • Shape a pile of earth on a tray into a small mound with a hole at the top to look like an anthill.

    Discuss with children:
         -What animal do you think could crawl through this small hole and live underground?
         -Where have you seen ants?
         -Why don't people want ants around?
