5. Organisms in ecosystems exchange energy and nutrients among themselves and with the environment.
As a basis for understanding this concept, students know:
a. energy entering ecosystems as sunlight is transferred by producers into chemical energy through photosynthesis, and then from organism to organism in food webs.
b. over time, matter is transferred from one organism to others in the food web, and between organisms and the physical environment.
c. populations of organisms can be categorized by the functions they serve in an ecosystem.
d. different kinds of organisms may play similar ecological roles in similar biomes.
e. the number and types of organisms an ecosystem can support depends on the resources available and abiotic factors, such as quantity of light and water, range of temperatures, and soil composition.

Instructional Objectives
   1.  Students will be able to pass a plant part and photosynthesis quiz with 70% accuracy.
    2.  Students will be able to locate information on a self selected animal online.
     3. Students will give a powerpoint presentation of their findings.
     4.  Students will pass a multiple choice and short answer test with 70% accuracy. Student Activities
Introductory Activity
Students will individually demonstrate competency on basic computer skills.  Turn on computer, run a program, basic word processing skills.
Pretest
       1.  View a Tour of Biomes on the Internet
       2.  Vocabulary activities - define science terms   Enabling Activity(ies)
        1.  View Photosynthesis Web Page
        2. Play the Great Plant Escape
        3.  To begin the study of the cycle of energy, print out the Cycle of Energy Worksheet.  Discuss the terms and complete the worksheet.
         2.   Have the students pick an ecosystem that they would like to represent. They then need to research one of the animals that live there. This may be done using the library or on line. Research links for kids have been provided on this site. Print out the Project Planning Worksheet.
)
Culminating Activity
      1.   Direct Instruction on basic Powerpoint design.
      2.   Once your students have finished their research, they can begin working with the powerpoint program by  choosing a design template, making a title page, adding three bullet pages with graphics. They will then give a short  presentation to the class. Assessmemt
