Introduction
In this lesson students will review the periods of time when Europeans immigrated to the United States.  Students are introduced to the regions they came from  and the reasons why they immigrated.

1.Discuss the waves of immigrants from Europe between 1789 and 1850 and their   modes of transportation into the Ohio and Mississippi Valleys and through the Cumberland Gap (e.g., overland wagons, canals, flatboats, steamboats).

Instructional Objectives
  1. Given a map of Europe students will identify the major regions where immigration originated.
  2. Within study of European immigration students will list a minimum of eight reasons for immigration.
  3. After viewing a laser disc presentation of an interview with an immigrant, students will be able to name a minimum of sentiments expressed by the immigrants.
  4. After interviewing an immigrant, students will summarize the major events leading to immigration.

  Student Activities

Introductory Activity

Teacher conducted a formal review of vocabulary found in this lesson.  Students were asked to write them down in their personal dictionaries for future reference.

Students were asked to share their ideas on why people were leaving their countries to come to America.  These ideas were written on the overhead so that everyone could view them. Students were then placed in expert groups and given information to read.  Their task was to read the information and summarize the information using a graphic organizer.  They were to summarize the main idea and details.  Students then returned to their home group and shared the information they learned while in their expert group.  The information was then compared to the information on the overhead.

Enabling Activity(ies)
After teacher reads The Lotus Seed students will answer question cards assigned to their group.  Students will discuss and decide on an answer for each question.  Students are assigned numbers.  They are responsible for writing the answer to the question that corresponds to their number on a slate.  Answers are discussed with the whole group.

 

Culminating Activity
Students will use the information they have acquired from the activities they have participated in to do one of the following:

  • Make an oral presentation as they take on the identity of an immigrant.
  • Memorize the poem "The Great Colossus" and recite it to the class.
  • Make an oral presentation of the four waves of immigration and them.
  • Draw a timeline of the American immigration history
