  Introduction
In this lesson students are introduced to the language of music, (elements of music ) to enable them to read music and to give them a better appreciation and understanding of music.  All of the elements will not be presented in this lesson. Elements presented in this lesson are:  1. Rhythm, (beat, meter, duration, pattern) 2. Melody, (musical alphabet, clef, pitch) 3.  Tempo/Dynamics, (faster/slower, louder/softer for expressive purposes) .

Standards Addressed
Standard 1. Artistic Perception

Processing, analyzing, and responding to sensory information through the language and skills unique to the arts

Music descriptor: Students listen to, analyze, and describe music using music terminology. They read and notate music.

Benchmarks

1. The student demonstrates knowledge of and is able to analyze the uses of the elements of music.

2. The student identifies and uses standard notation symbols.

Instructional Object

1.  Given a song and recording of that song, students will define and describe the elements of rhythm, melody, and tempo/dynamics.

2.  Given music manuscript paper students will write and perform (play, sing, or chant) a eight measure composition, demonstrating their knowledge of rhythm, melody, and tempo/dynamics.

  Student Activities
Introductory Activity

Students will take a short pretest in order to acquire what knowledge they have on pitch, rhythm, and tempo/dynamics.  However, before taking the pretest students can learn how much fun one can have with the knowledge of music with the use of puzzles.  http://home.earthlink.net/~bluesman1/java1.html

Culminating Activity

Students will use their knowledge of music to write an eight measure composition and describe to the teacher/class all parts of their composition.  They then will present their composition to the teacher/class by playing, singing, or chanting.
