Introduction
In order to proceed successfully in the "You and the Law" course curriculum, students must first understand the basic concepts of both civil and criminal law.  This lesson is designed to teach these concepts to the class early in the school year and also provide a base of understanding for n ew students throughout the year as they enroll in the class.

It is structured to follow the domains of Bloom's Taxonomy.

Instructional Objectives

By the completion of this lesson, students will:

*   Identify the two major groups of law: civil and criminal.
*   Identify the adversarial parties in civil and criminal law.
*   Identify tort and crime cases within a given group of supplied cases.
*   Demonstrates comprehension of fundamental law vocabulary 70% proficiency.
*   Discuss the basic components of a case in paragraph form.
*   Explain how a single case may involve both civil and criminal law.
*   Distinguish critical elements of landmark Supreme Court decisions that have further refined the civil and criminal justice systems.
*   Predict how a U.S. Colurt would have decided an international court case.
*   Create a fictitious case exemplifying civil or criminal law.
*   Design a mini-law library listing a minimum of 5 civil law cases and 5 criminal law cases.
*   Write a critique of both the civil and criminal law systems highlighting observed strengths and making suggestions for perceived needed improvements.
*   Role play a mock trial in a small group setting.
