Instructional Objectives
 

  • Students will be able to discuss the life and teachings of Confucius.
  • Students will understand the political and cultural problems in the time of Confucius.
  • Students will relate how Confucius sought to solve the problems at his time.
  • Students will be able to identify contemporary translations of Confucius sayings.
  • Students will be able to identify Confucius' relevant areas of his beliefs.
  • Students will illustrate their understanding of a teaching of Confucius and identify his relevant areas of his beliefs.

    Student Activities

    This lesson is designed to take place over  3-4 class  periods of approximately 30 miniutes. 

    The activities in this lesson plan include (1) taking a Pre-Assessment Quiz, (2) reading a handout and using a dictionary, (3) match Confucius sayings with contemporary language, (4) illustrating a saying and identify Confucius belief areas, and (5) taking a Post-Assessment Quiz.

    Introductory Activity

    The first activity in this lesson is to take the Pre-Assessment Test getting the students familiar with Confucius and possible facts about his life.

    Activities

    The remaining learning activities are reading a handout, looking up unfamiliar words in a dictionary, matching Confucius sayings with contemporary language and finally taking the Post-Assessment Quiz.

    Culminating Activity

    The final activity is to illustrate one of the sayings from the matching using the saying as the caption.  The student will also identify the revalent areas that Confucius believed to be necessary to become a better person and contribute to make society a better place.
