Number sense game sites aligned with sixth grade math curriculum.

Word document file containing 6th grade math number sense games .

    Introduction
      1. Number Sense is  to math what "common sense" is to real life.
      1. Number sense creates options , no more pre-memorized rules.
      1. Number sense gained by applying thoughtful activities about their relationships ,and their connection to "real life" .
      1. Number sense learned thru discovery  becomes an ongoing
                developmental process.

      1. Number sense's core is number meaning and is analyzed through number descriptions, relationships, context and magnitude.
      1. Number sense allows us to develope an operation sense or problem solving ability, which is needed to apply and use math effectively.
      1. Subject Mathematics
      1. Topic:Mathematical reasoning with Number sense

    Standards Addressed

  • Student games will have a number sense focus, using mathematical reasoning standards as an approach to problem solving.:

  • Mathematical Reasoning
1.0 Students make decisions about how to approach problems:
1.1 Analyze problems by identifying relationships, distinguishing relevant from
irrelevant information, identifying missing information, sequencing and
    prioritizing information, and observing patterns.
1.2 Formulate and justify mathematical conjectures based on a general description
of the mathematical question or problem posed.
1.3 Determine when and how to break a problem into simpler parts.
2.4 Use a variety of methods, such as words, numbers, symbols, charts, graphs, tables,
diagrams, and models, to explain mathematical reasoning.
2.7 Make precise calculations and check the validity of the results from the context
    of the problem.

    Sixth Grade

Math: Focus on using Math Reasoning to solve Number Sense games.

    Instructional Objectives
After reviewing the PACE problem solving model, students will be able to apply this model to varied number sense games.
        1. The student will define the four components of PACE(Problem,Action,Calculate,Evaluate).
        1. The student will use pictures, numbers and words to best explain the components, process and outcome of the game.
        1. The student will analyze the effectiveness of their math strategies in playing the game and it's final outcome.
        1. The student will develop an adapted version or new game that is similar in focus to the previous game that was played.
        1. The student will critique three other adapted student games using a four point rubric.

    Student Activities
IAfter reviewing lesson standards , objectives and vocabulary the teacher will review the PACE format on a Power Point presentation using an introductory  activity(number sense game called KRYPTO).

The enabling activity will be a table game of KRYPTO with a verbal table summary (PACE format).

The culminating activity will be a student choice selection of a number sense game from online  or inclass game selection with an individual PACE summary required. (This culminating activity will be an onging inclass and homework assignment  through out the school year.)

A matrix table (Access) will record students game playing success.

    Introductory Activity

The overhead PACE template will be reviewed as a problem solving tool.

P (Problem)  requires that the student  use MR 1.0 to identify how to approach the problem by identifying it's parts and restating them in a 1-2 sentence summary using (MR3.5)pictures,numbers and words.

A (Action) requires students  use MR 1.2  to formulate a conjecture or plan based on the probem posed.

C(Calculate) requires students to  use MR1.3break the problem into simplier parts and use (MR2.5)pictures,numbers and words to(MR2.7) to make precise calculations .

E (Evaluate) requires students t (MR2.7) check the validity of the results from the context of the problem.

    Enabling Activity(ies)

Krypto is a number sense game that can be played with a partner or whole group.  A target number is chosen by rolling two dice, then five additional numbers are rolled.  Players may use any math function or operation using each of the rolled numbers only once to reach the target number.t

    Culminating Activity
Students may choose number sense games from inclass selections as well as linked and other internet sites.
