Introduction
This is a one to two week project on nutrition that is targeted for High School level students
but, could easily be used for Middle School students as well.  Students will track their diet for two days (one weekend and one weekday) and via the internet, research the foods and provide nutritional information on each.  They will need to find total calories per day, fat (grams), protein and carbohydrates.  Additionally, students will need to calculate percents of each and compare them to the FDA Food Guide Pyramid.  Students will then use the food pyramid and design and create a poster based on their diet for the two days.
Subject: Health
Topic: Nutrition
Grade Level: 9-12

Enabling Activity(ies)
Day 1
Journal question: List the top ten foods you like the most.  Brief class discussion about favorite foods and whether they would be considered healthy or unhealthy.  Explain reasons for the pre-test (evaluate how much they currently know and to verify the degree of learning that has taken place at the end of the unit) and have students complete it.  Students will then re-create and complete a diagram from the board about why, what and when people eat.  Class discussion during each category.  Conclude class with a statement that it is useful to know this information so that one can establish good eating patterns and habits.
