Introduction
The purpose of this lesson is to teach a student to make "real meaning" from new vocabulary words using the dictionary.  We will be reading "The Last of the Mohicans, adapted by Les Martin.  In this lesson, I used the condensed version published by Random House, Inc., which is part of the Bullseye Collection.  I am using the 2nd -3rd grade reading level of this book.

  1. Students will use the online dictionary effectively.
  2. Students will be able to explain a definition in his/her own words.
  3. Students will be able to use word in an oral/writtem sentence.

Student Activities
Students will be given 2 vocabulary words from the first chapter of the book.  They will then be asked to use the online dictionary to define both words.  As an enabling activity, the student will then use these words in their own sentences.  As a culminating activity,  the students will be given a short exam to reaffirm their knowledge of the meaning of each word, being asked to define the word and use each in a complete sentence.
