Introduction
This lesson is to assist all teachers and the library media teacher while showing the students a variety
of different reference and research materials and skills.. The exercise may be in a game
format and it will follow the Big Six model for research.

a) Students will be given basic research
information experience using the Big
Six model for
research activities.
b) Instructor and Library Media Teacher will
collaborate to plan for the topics that need to be used for "The
Reference Skills Game."
c) A list of topics and a set of questions for
each topic will be submitted to the library technician so that they will be
aware of the "Topic of the Week." This will enable the
technician to be prepared for the student search.
c) Students participating in the exercise will
be given a "Topic of the Week." It will be their challenge to
follow the clues that will be posted each day and to use a variety of
resources to find the answer.
d) Students must keep a record of the steps that they had taken to find the
answer by noting the resources that they used while following the clues.
e) Recognition will be given the student by posting their names on
the Library Media Bulletin Board and/or classroom credit will be given to the
student as part of a classroom assignment.

After reviewing the Big6 model for research, the students
will be able to participate in a reference/research assignment and follow the
steps in that model. This assignment may be a one time experience or it
may be an ongoing assignment that may include several curricula areas.

After collecting clues from such resources as online
encyclopedias, research books, prior knowledge, atlases, and other resources,
students will be able to come to a conclusion about the answer to the weekly
question.

Students will be able to map out their progress as they
use each resource and draw a diagram of their search.

Students will be able to assess the value of the resources
that they used during their search.

Students will be expected to complete a worksheet to
submit as their evaluation of the process. This evaluation sheet will
include: "How they would change their strategy."

After participating in this activity, the student will be
able to explain process the Big 6 model for research and incorporate

Students will be given an orientation concerning the resources that are
available to them for reference and research projects in the Library Media
Center including both online and hard copy. Each student will also take a
pretest to evaluate their prior knowledge. Insert brief summaries of
your introductory, enabling, and culminating activities. Insert links to
online resources in your text and insert links to activities on your student
lesson web site.
