Standards Addressed
  • September: Math:  Measurement and Geometry:  Students model situations geometrically, algebraically, and use coordinate geometry to formulate and solve problems.
    • 1.3      Use the Pythagorean Theorem to determine distance and compare lengths of segments on a coordinate plane
  • October's appropriate standard
  • Novermber's appropriate standard
  • December's appropriate standard
  • January's appropriate standard
  • February's appropriate standard
  • March's appropriate standard
Instructional Objectives

Students will become familiar with the history and times which influenced featured mathematicians.  Students will extend their learning by solving mathematical problems using principles presented by each mathematician.

Student Activities
Each month students will go to the month's web page.  There they will access biographical information (via the internet) about the month's featured mathematician.   Students will progress to actual mathematical activities which relate to that mathematician's contributions to the field.

Introductory Activity
Students will first get acquainted with the featured mathematician by searching web sources for biographical information.  Students will take notes, using the rubric as a guide, in preparation for writing a mini-bio of the mathematician.

 Enabling Activity(ies)
Mathematical applications
 Culminating Activity
Students will save each month's work into a year-long collection.  In May, each student will select the mathematician of his/her choice to present to the class.
 Assessment

Insert your grading rubric for the culminating activity or a link to your rubric or test document file.

 Results
After implementing your lesson (sometime between January & March), insert a chart of your pre-test, post-test, and culminating assessment data.
