Introduction
Kindergarten students are required to observe, describe, compare and sort, and communicate their observations.  The study of space provides a focus which is naturally  motivating to children.  Students will become familiar with the differences and similarities of the planets and their order in space.
Subject: Science
Topic: The Solar System
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Student Lesson
Standards Addressed
Kindergarten
Science:

1. Properties of materials can be observed, measured, and predicted.  As a basis for understanding this concept:
     a.  Students know objects can be described in terms of the materials they are made of (e.g., clay, cloth, paper) and their physical properties (e.g., color, size, shape, weight, texture, flexibility, attraction to magnets, floating, sinking).

3.  Earth is composed of land, air, and water.  As a basis for understanding this concept:
     b.  Students know changes in weather occur from day to day and across seasons, affecting Earth and its inhabitants.

4.  Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations.  As a basis for understanding this concept and addressing the content in the other three strands , students should develop their own questions and perform investigations.  Students will:
     d.  Compare and sort common objects by one physical attribute (e.g., color, shape, texture, size, weight).
     e.  Communicate observations orally and through drawings.

Instructional Objectives
**Students will utilize the computer and navigate with the mouse to listen to information about each planet.
**After viewing each planet on the computer, students will be able to identify some of  the similarities and differences of the planets.
**Students will be able to create a model of the solar system.
**After learning a song of the planets in order, students will be able to sequence the planets using the Sun as the center.

Student Activities
Introductory Activity
Have the students brainstorm what they know about space/planets     using a KWL chart
     Sing Space Songs
Read a book from the "Books about Planets" list

Enabling Activity(ies)
Use the computer to explore the planets
Sing Planet Rap or Ordering the Planets to teach the planet order
Sequencing of the planets - Color/cut/paste planet  Culminating Activity
  Construct a solar system
  Solar system models

Assessment
Teacher observation - Did the student construct their solar system accurately?  Is the student able to sing "The Planet Rap" or "Ordering the Planets" accurately?  Can the students verbally explain similarities and differences of the planets?
