Movement Skills and Movement Knowledge
This lesson is for the teacher who wants
to teach his or her students to develop an active healthy lifestyle. Teaching
students to make fitness a regular part of their lifestyle will help them
to meet the demands of everyday living. They will also learn that
developing good fitness habits will help them achieve better health and
wellness.

Instructional
Objectives
Students in grade
eight who meet this standard will be able to:

Describe how to improve
and maintain appropriate body composition.

Describe principles
of training and conditioning for specific physical activities.

Design Personal health
related fitness programs based upon a fitness profile assessed by fitness
scores.

Assess physiological
indicators of exercise during and after physical activity.

Engage in physical activity
at the target heart rate for a minimum of 20 minutes three times a week.
Student
Activities
-
Students will define
the FIT formula (frequency, intensity, time) correctly, give appropriate
examples of each indicator, and work in cooperative groups to correctly
describe the concepts on paper.

Students will complete
weekly activity logs of cardiorespiratory activities, including duration
and time.

Students will outline
fitness programs designed to meet their needs as determined by their scores
on fitness tests. Students can be assessed by pre- and post-fitness-tests.

Students will implement
their programs into their daily Physical Education class.
Introductory
Activity
-
The students will use
the internet to research a variety of exercises and fitness programs.
They will also use the internet to find definitions for terms used in fitness
and physical education.

The students will develop
and organize a program that meets their personal fitness needs.

Students will begin to apply their personalized programs into their daily
Physical Education class.

The students will test themselves in the three areas of fitness concerned
with this lesson: cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility.

During physical education
class the students will implement their programs.

At the end of each class
students will record their daily activities in their portfoloios.

Activities involved
in this unit can range from walking, running and jumping rope, to
push-ups, pull-ups, and stretching.
Culminating
Activity
-
The students will present
their findings to the class about the fitness activities they have been
doing and report their results.
Assessment
-
A pre-test and post-test assessment
will be administered to the class. The students will be given three
tests: 1. a 1 mile timed walk, 2. push-ups, and 3. seated toe touching
for measurement.

Students will be able to explain
the necessity of being involved in physical exercise throughout their lifetime.
Results
After implementing your lesson
(sometime between January & March), insert a chart of your pre-test,
post-test, and culminating assessment data.
