Introduction
The world is made of atoms.  The world is powered by radiation.
What radiation is, and how we found out about it.

Enabling Activity(ies)

                         Health or Physical Science

Date: ________________                        Name: __________________

For a ½ credit in Health or Physical Science do the following.

I.   Read:   Part 1 “How Radiation Was Discovered” and “Radiation
      and You”

     A. Define the following:

         1.   Alpha radiation                        2.  Beta radiation
         3.   Black light                                4.  Cosmic rays
         5.   Electromagnetic spectrum         6.  Fission
         7.   Fusion                                       8.  Gamma rays
         9.   Infrared                                   10.  Ion
        11.  Ionization radiation                 12.  Isotopes
        13.  Microwaves                              14.  Neutron
        15.  Nucleus                                    16.  Ozone
        17.  Radiation                                 18.  Radioactive
        19.  Radium                                    20.  Rem
        21.  Speed of  light                          22.  Ultraviolet
        23.  Uranium                                   24.  Wavelength
        25.  X-rays

     B. Research the following people on the internet
       ( go to www.metacrawler.com)
What are their contributions to Health and Science , and when
did  they live and die or are they still living?  (Half a written
         page for each)

         1.   Becquerel, Henri                   2.   Newton. Issac
         3.   Roentgen, Wilhelm               4.   Curie, Marie
         5.   Maxwell, James                    6. Young, Thomas

    C. Research the following on the internet.  Do a one page
         investigation.

        1. Ozone is an interesting chemical.  It is harmful when we
breath to much of it.  It is necessary at high altitudes to
keep out potentially harmful radiation coming to us from
the sun.  In other words, we don't want ozone and we do
want ozone.  Investigate the details of this problem today.
Look into contributions trees make to ozone accumulation.

            b. (http://www.epa.gov/ozone/science/makemore.html)

              c.  (http://sedac.ciesin.org/ozone/)

       2. Investigate specific ways the sun's radiation can help and
harm.  One unusual application of sunlight today is in
combating depression.  See if you can come up with others.

          a.   Harmful
