     Reactions
           (5) Chemical reactions are processes in which atoms are rearranged into different
           combinations of molecules. As a basis for understanding this concept:
                  (e.) Students know how to determine if a solution is acidic, basic, or neutral.

Instructional Objectives

Students will :
     1. learn the definitions of acid and base.
     2. learn how to distinguish between an acid and a base.
     3. learn the meaning of neutralization and be able to give the applications. 
     4. know how to use various indicators to determine the pH of a solution. 
     5. learn various natural and human causes that affect the pH of a waterway.
     6. monitor the pH of a stream.


Student Activities

Introductory Activity
Acid Base demonstration 
Learn more about Acid Base Reactions at home
 

Enabling Activities
Students will complete the student information pages:
   1. What are Acids and Bases ?
   2. What is pH ?
   3. The pH of Rivers and Streams
 
 

Culminating Activity
Students will take a field trip to South Wolf Creek at Lode Star, a local steam, and assess various water quality parameters including  pH.
 
 

Assessment
Students will take a multple choice post test and instructor will evaluate journal entries. Results
Students will pass the post test with a score of 80% or better
