Introduction
Over a four day period students will study the concepts of acids, bases, salts and neutralization. As part of  a steam adoption program, acid rain and other ecological implications are discussed. Students will use indicators to obtain pH values of household chemicals and to measure the pH of a local stream.  Students will use standard methods to determine the quality value of water for pH.

Standards Addressed:

Eighth Grade Science: Focus on Physical Science

     Reactions
           (5) Chemical reactions are processes in which atoms are rearranged into different
combinations of molecules. As a basis for understanding this concept:
(e.) Students know how to determine if a solution is acidic, basic, or neutral.

Instructional Objectives

Students will :
     1. learn the definitions of acid and base.
     2. learn how to distinguish between an acid and a base.
     3. learn the meaning of neutralization and be able to give the applications.
     4. know how to use various indicators to determine the pH of a solution.
     5. learn various natural and human causes that affect the pH of a waterway.
     6. monitor the pH of a stream.
