Student Activities

Introductory Activity

Begin by reviewing what we've learned while reading and
discussing Hamlet.  Group work on themes and characters and
their modern day application.

Group leader reports back how various aspects of Hamlet seem
much like our modern world.

Introduce another play, The Taming of the Shrew, by handing out a
a description of the basic plot of the play.  Explain that they will be
shown a modern day film, Ten Things I Hate About You and be asked to
draw comparisons between its content and The Taming of the Shrew.

Enabling Activities

Give each student a form that is divided into sections for characters
locations, goals, motivations, conflicts, resolutins.  Each student will
write down similarities they recognize between Shrew and this film.

View film:  Ten Things I Hate About You.

Bring ideas to group, share and compile one good comprehensive list
of the similarities they saw between the film and the play.Evaluations should be made about which medium did a better job in depicting
character, setting, conflicts, etc.

Next, explain they will be reading and discussing a variety of scenes
from different Shakespearean plays with the goal of chosing one to rewrite in modern terms in a modern day setting, etc.

Culminating Activity

A three-four page typed script that will be performed for the class.  They must include character masks they have made or dress according to the part.
