Introduction
Students will calculate the
time traveled with respect to speed and distance. Lessons will
introduce and apply scale and time/distance formulas to real life
situations.
Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Scale, Time/Distance,
Grade Level: 5/6
Student Lesson :Roadtrip

Sixth Grade Mathematics Standards Addressed:
Algebra
and Functions
2.0 Analyze
and use tables, graphs, and rules to solve problems involving rates and
proportions.
2.2 Demonstrate an understanding that rate
as a measure of one quantity per
unit value of another quantity.
2.3 Solve problems involving rates, average speed,
distance, and time.
Mathematical
Reasoning
1.0
Make decisions about how to approach problems:
1.1 Analyze problems by identifying relationships,
distinguishhing relevant from
irrelevant information, identifying missing information, sequencing and
prioritizing ingormation, and observing patterns.
Instructional Objectives
-
Students wil be able to determine
a route from one location to another, recording the name/number and
direction of roads as listed on a road map.
-
Students wil be able to determine
the total distance from point to point on a road map.
-
Students will be able to determine
the time needed to travel from one location to another at any speed.
-
Students will provide an organizd
presentation of their final data and calculations.
Student Activities
Introductory
Activity
-Students are put in groups
of three to four and given "The
Rules of the Road"
-Each groups will locate
a beginning and ending location for their travels. A general route
from a
starting point to
a specific destination will be described and recorded.
Enabling
Activity(ies)
-Basic Directions : There
and Back Again
•Name/number of road or highway.
•Direction (N,S,E,W) that road goes.
•Name/location where road or highway changes.
•Number of miles to reach next road or highway to be traveled.
•Amount of time needed to travel recorded miles.
-Step by Step Activity Record
•Beginning and ending point of each driving session.
•Distance traveled from one point to the next : Time
and Distance Worksheet
•Time taken to travel from one point to the next.
Culminating Activity
-Students organize their
data in a folder, displaying their records and calculations in a logical
order that
leads to distances,
direction, and time travelled for their designated trip.
Assessment
Pretest - Go to "Fun Brain"
RoadTrip 2001 Pretest
Post test - Road Trip 2001 Post Test
Results
After implementing your
lesson (sometime between January & March), insert a chart of your pre-test,
post-test, and culminating assessment data.

Introductory Activity
ROADTRIP
2000
You have been given the
job of delivering an envelope by car to a location in the USA. You will
be responsible for determining the time and distance travelled. Your entire
trip's time, distance and speed must be accurately accounted for in the
form of an organized log:
RULES OF THE ROAD
1. Your school is
your starting point.
2. Chose a destination
that is at least 250 miles away, "As the crow flys".
3. Average speed
is 60 mph.
Final Question:
•How far have
you driven and how long did it take to get there and back again?
