This lesson allows students to be exposed to one group of careers in the wide world of careers. It will give an overview of various careers in which service is given to the public, such as teacher, nurse, librarian, hair stylist, police officer, cashier, etc.
Topic: Exploring service careers Grade Level: 4-6 Fourth
to Sixth Grade
R2.1 Student uses a variety of strategies to understand informational text.
The student will be able to identify and list a minimum of 10 careers in the service career cluster. He will be able to name three duties of each career. Students will read about different careers in the service field. The student will also listen to presentations by people in service career fields, and visit places in the community to see people engaged in service careers. A trip to the police station and the fire station would be appropriate. Introductory Activity Students will be asked to make a list of all the careers they know individually. This will also serve as a pre-test for this lesson. The students will then share their lists with the whole group. The teacher will make a group list on chart paper. Enabling Activity(ies) The teacher will focus students' attention on places of work in Galt. A group discussion will enable students to name addtional careers they had not thought of. The teacher and the students will add to the initial list of careers as the discussion progresses. Students will read about many different careers, listen to the teacher read about careers, and visit places of work in Galt. Workers will also be invited to speak to the students about their jobs. Culminating ActivityAfter students have been exposed to many careers, they will choose three to pursue further. They will use the Occupational Handbook to research their choices. They will write a paragraph for each of their choices, including education needed for the job, job responsibilities, and job availability. They will also record beginning salaries for their choices. They will then be ready to begin the budgeting program entitled Making Ends Meet. Students will make a list of 10 careers they are aware of and give three duties of each career. After implementing your lesson (sometime between January & March), insert a chart of pre-test, post-test, and culminating assessment data. Introductory
