story, research a feature topic, and write a feature story. Student work
will be published on the school website.

and other resources, including the teacher or peers as appropriate.

by adding or deleting details and explanations, clarifying difficult passages,
and rearranging words, sentences, and paragraphs to improve meaning.

Evaluate and respond to the critiques of peers and teachers.

Critique the writing of a peer, using a scoring guide that the teacher and
class have discussed and developed.

Introductory
Activity
Students will read a feature story from a
internet and complete a worksheet evaluating the writing style peculiar to
featuresEnabling
Activities
From a list of teacher-approved topics,
each student will choose a person to research, research online and at the
library, that person's life, and develop a feature story on the person.
(Students will discover that the teacher has chosen these people specifically
for their connections to the Imperial Valley and Yuma area.) Students will
peer edit these features in groups. Students will respond to peer
critiques of their work. Students will rewrite their work. Culminating
Activity
The feature stories will be compiled and
published to the school's web page.

Results
After implementing your lesson
