An introduction to the impressionistic style of western European art with an emphasis of study based on six specific painters.

 Instructional Objectives

  1. To familiarize high school students with the impressionistic era of western European art.
  2. Introduce high school students to six prominent impressionistic painters.
  3. Edgar Degas (1834-1917)
  4. Claude Monet (1840-1926)
  5. Paul Cézanne (1839-1906)
  6. Eduoard Manet (1832-1883)
  7. Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919)
  8. Mary Cassatt (1845-1926)
  9. Discuss use of pointillist painting style explored during this era
  10. Common subjects used of the impressionistic era
  11. Complementary use of color                                                                                                            
  
Student Activities
Involving students in an on-line search for paintings of the above listed Impressionistic painters.  Throughout the search students will notate and compare the use of painting technique, different subjects  painted, color patterns and usage of colors.                        .
Introductory Activity
Searching through museum and individual artist sites students will investigate the use of color and light within the six painters. Students will engage in the investigation of academic style and the style which the revolutionary "impressionists" adapted.

Enabling Activity(ies)
Students will vary their search to include painting style (pointillism), composition, subject matter, use of natural light, bright color and spotlighting effects.

Culminating Activity
Students will bring together data collected in the plurality of  their search together in a power point presentation.  Comparing two or three of the artists that have been investigated illustrating  the differences or the commonalities with the use actual museum collections and other art sources, students will bring the impressionistic use of  light, reflection, subject matter,  and composition into their power point presentations.

                                                                

Assessment

The grading rubric for the culminating power point presentation is quite in depth including PowerPoint requirements and project requirements.

Introductory Activity
