Introduction
Students will demonstrate their word processing
skills, data base skills, and knowledge of the research process by
identifying, accessing, collecting, and documenting information relevant
to their eighth grade report topic. The lesson involves teaching
eighth grade students to document and store research data onto Appleworks
data base. The students will learn how to cut and paste from sources
from the internet to their data base "cards" on their desktop.

Eighth Grade English: Writing Strategies
1.0 Writing Strategies
Students write clear, coherent, and focused essays. The writing exhibits
students’
awareness of audience and purpose. Essays contain formal introductions,
supporting
evidence, and conclusions. Students progress through the stages of the
writing process
as needed.
1.4 Plan and conduct multiple-step information searches by using computer
networks and
modems.
2.0 Writing Characteristics (Genres and Their Characteristics)
Students write narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive essays
of at least 500 to
700 words in each genre. Student writing demonstrates a command of standard
American
English and the research, organizational, and drafting strategies outlined
in Writing
Standard 1.0.
2.3 Write research reports:
b. Record important ideas, concepts, and direct quotations from significant
information
sources and paraphrase and summarize all perspectives on the topic, as
appropriate.
Eighth Grade Science: Investigation and Experimentation
1. Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting
careful
investigations. As a basis for understanding this concept and addressing
the content
in the other four strands, students should develop their own questions
and perform
investigations. Students will:
m. Investigate a science-based societal issue by researching the literature,
analyzing
data, and communicating the findings. Examples of issues include irradiation
of food,
cloning of animals by somatic cell nuclear transfer, choice of energy
sources, and land
and water use decisions in California.
Instructional
Objectives
I. Using Appleworks:
A.
Learn how to data base for constructing "electronic" cards for research
documentation.
B.
Students will learn and utilize skills of layouts to organize cards for
easy access
in writing report.
C.
Create layout for a Bibliography
D.
Students will learn how to transfer (cut and paste) notes from internet
research
for eighth grade project to "data base cards".
II. Students will
learn how to go to the internet to find the standards for documentation
in MLA and ALA.
