Introduction

Completion of this unit will provide the learner with the competency for the Basic Lifesaver CPR certification. Written material does not constitute a CPR course.  The certification has no written test but requires a practical demonstration on a rescui-manikin from a certified instructor. This class is taught in a co-ed class of 32 students in a classroom situation with a rescui-manikin for every two students to practice the procedures.

Standard 2    The student  will understand how and why they move in a variety of situations and use this information to enhance their own skills.

Standard 5    The student will demonstrate responsible personal behavior while participating in movement activities.

Standard 6    The student will demonstrate responsible social behavior while participating in movement activities.  The student will understand the importance of respect for all others.

Instructional Objectives Back to the top

The student will be able to identify an obstructed airway and demonstrate the Heimlich Maneuver.

The student will be able to demonstrate the basic steps of CPR.

The student will be able to assess emergency situations and determine the appropriate response (airway obstruction, nonresponsiveness with breathing, nonresponsiveness with no breathing, nonbreathing with pulse, and nonbreathing with no pulse).

The student will be able to work cooperatively and collaboratively  in practice situations to demonstrate all skills.

Student Activities Back to the top
Students will have practice opportunities to work independently and collaboratively to learn basic lifesaver skills.  The skills introduced will begin with taking a heart rate and progress to identifying emergency situations that require intervention for airway obstruction and cardiac  arrest.

Introductory Activity
Students will participate in a discussion of lifesaving experiences and the emotional feelings of witnessing a heart attack or serious trauma to a loved one.  This should be an enpowering discussion for students to be aware how they can make a difference in saving a life through training as a lifesaver.

Enabling Activity(ies)

  • Students will begin by locating their own pulse rate and participating in some aerobic activities to gain an awareness of the change in heartrate and the recover phase.
  • Students will practice the rescue procedures on Rescui-Annie manikins as single rescuers and with partners
  • Students will be given scenarios to practice assessment and action procedures
  • Students will work in small groups and with partners to gain the background knowledge for the terminology, risk factors, and heart and lung anatomy and functions.
 Culminating Activity
Students will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the rescue procedures for a conscious and unconscious victim for an obstructed airway and for cardiac arrest.

Assessment                         Back to the top
Each student will participate in daily physical education with an effort to improve individual skills in basic livesaver techniques.  The rubric and standards are based on state standards 2, 5, and 6.

Results
The students were given a pretest to assess the base knowledge of the class.  A post test was given to the students to measure to knowledge gained through the class practical  demonstrations and written examination. The Basic Lifesaver examination was given at the beginning of the class to get a feel for the class baseline knowledge.  The same test was given at the end of the unit to see if learning had taken place.  This test is not part of the Basic Lifesaver certification.  Go to pre/post-test results

Go to Final Presentation for the teacher summary and observations from participating in this project.
