Introduction
This is a series of  5 lessons to introduce students to the variety of life in the rainforest.  Students will research minimum of 3 different animals from the tropical rainforest.  They will be able to identify one physical characteristic that helps each animal survive in this environment.  There are virtual rainforest tours that students will take to research animal and plant life.

    2. Plants and animals meet their needs in different ways. As a basis for understanding this concept:
            a. Students know different plants and animals inhabit different kinds of 
     environments and have external features that help them thrive in different kinds of 
      places.
            b. Students know both plants and animals need water, animals need food, and 
      plants need light.
            c. Students know animals eat plants or other animals for food and may also use 
      plants or even other animals for shelter and nesting.
 

 
Instructional Objectives
 
  1. Students will be able to name 3 animals found in the tropical rainforest.
  2. After reading the hand outs on gorillas, tigers, and sloths, students will be able to tell three facts about each.
  3. Students will be able to locate the continents on which these animals are found .
  4. After collecting information from the tour, the hand outs, and various books, students will be able to name one physical feature that helps an animal survive in its environment.
  5. After completing all five lessons, students will be able to pass a multiple choice quiz on animal adaptations.
  6. Students will be able to write, edit, and revise a two paragraph page on their choice of an animal for their rainforest animal report.

Student Activities

Introductory Activity
Students will take a multiple choice pretest. Teacher will introduce the topic.  Small groups will take a virtual tour of the Costa Rican rainforest to become familiar with the animals that live there.

Enabling Activity(ies)
Small groups will view portions of the virtual tour, take notes and complete homework assignments.   Students will read hand out information on several different animals from different continents. Culminating Activity
  Students will take a multiple choice post test.  Students will decide on one animal to research in depth.  Assessment
