Instructional Objectives
  1. Each student will take a pretest and a post test of ten (10) multiple choice questions composed of literary terms.
  2. Each student will read a synopsis of The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry and demonstrate understanding by stopping and summarizing what is occurring in the story as he/she reads. (Written in the 18th century and with vocabulary from England and not American English will make the original story difficult for ELL students).
  3. Students will demonstrate understanding of the story by participating in group or classroom oral discussions from a list of questions and multiple choice following the reading.
  4. A story usually has one main theme and several minor themes.  (In order to facilitate discussion of themes for ELL students, a teacher has to pre-teach theme- vocabulary first.)
  5. Then provided with a list of eight (8) themes,  the students will identify and make a list of literature, movies or videos with related themes. (Multicultural references will provide an insight to the students' previous literature experiences.)
  6.  Each student will create a Found Poem to demonstrate understanding of the story's theme.

Student Activities

Introductory Activity
Provide the students with an envelope containing five short scenarios on index cards.  Ask the students to read each scenario and classify as to the feelings demonstrated by each. Then to rank from 1 to 5 as to which scenario is the most important to them and why.

Enabling Activity(ies)

A.   SYNOPSIS: The students have been provided with a copy of the synopsis. Working with a partner, the students will summarize what they have read after every two or three paragraphs. They will summarize in their own words and their own acquired writing skills.  Do not correct their text.  Discussion with their partners and asking questions is encouraged.

B.    QUESTIONS: First, discuss the questions with the students orally and assist them to formulate complete and correct oral responses.  Repeat and have them repeat several times the responses to the questions.  Second, provide the students with the questions on the worksheet and ask them to answer the questions.  Encourage the students to change wording to fit their own writing styles. Third, call on students to answer the questions and practice oral English skills.

C.   THEMES:

Additional Activity(ies)

A.   DRAWINGS: Draw a few sketches which illustrate the scenes from the story and write a brief description of each scene.

B.   DIALOG: With a partner, create a dialog between Jim and Della. Example, Della's justifying cutting her hair to Jim or Jim justifying selling his watch.  Example, a dialog between Della and Mne. Sofronie in the shop selling her hair.  Example, Della trying to buy back Jim's watch from a jeweler.

C.  WRITING: Ask the students to write a short autobiographical incident when they demonstrated unconditional love for another person or another person demonstrated unconditional love for them or a member of their family. Autobiographical Incident Worksheet

D.   ART WRITING:  Show the students postcards/paintings or sketches or Web Site clip art and ask them to describe what they see and what they feel from each picture.

Culminating Activity

Found Poem

Provide the students with a copy of the Original Version of The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry.  Discuss and show them the differences between the original text and synopsis.  Point out and discuss dialog and vocabulary differences. Then, the students will select a word or phrase from the story which made a deep impression on them. This word or phrase will become the title of the poem and the first line of each stanza. The number of stanzas are optional or a set number requested by the teacher. The students will complete the stanzas, 3 additional lines by selecting sentences or partial sentences or dialog from the text to retell the story. Setting, characters, character descriptions, economic status, theme, conflict, and plot, must be included in the poem.
