Activity
Provide the students with a copy of the Original
Version of The Gift of the Magi
by O. Henry. Discuss
and show them the differences between the original text and synopsis.
Point out and discuss dialog and vocabulary differences. Then,
the students will select a word or phrase from the story which made a deep
impression on them. This
word or phrase will become the title of the poem and the first line of each stanza.
The number of stanzas are optional or a set number requested by the teacher.
The students will complete the stanzas, 3 additional lines by selecting
sentences or partial sentences or dialog from the text to retell the story.
Setting, characters, character descriptions, economic status, theme, conflict,
and plot, must be included in the poem.
Students will take the post test. A second exam to test for additional acquired knowledge about the story is available, as well as a rubric for grading the poem. After implementing your lesson (sometime between January & March), insert a chart of your pre-test, post-test, and culminating assessment data. Introductory Activity
