Introduction
Standards in Construction Technology address three areas which include an Introductory core of knowledge, wood product manufacturing, and building industry concepts and skills that affect people in virtually every walk of life.  Curriculum designed from these model standards prepare individuals for employment  or advanced training in a variety of related industries. These standards
were developed by the California State Department of Education and referenced as part of the
Challenge Standards.

Lesson Standard (The links in this section will take you to the location that
delineates the objectives for the standard you select.)

Standard 1. Construction Core
1.1 Students interpret prints and apply the information to basic planning and
                          layout processes.
1.1.a Students will demonstrate the ability to measure to 1/16 of an inch
1.1.b Students will analyze a set of plans and interpret
dimensions necessary to the construction of a project.
1.1.c Students will demonstrate the ability to scale simple objects
                                     with an architect's scale.
1.1.d Students will create parts for individual and group projects based on
dimensions derived from plans and critique their accuracy.

Instructional Objectives: for Standard 1.1.a

1.  Students will identify and name specific tools common to the construction industry
     used to measure.

2.  Students will read a tape measure to an accuracy of 1/16th of an inch.

3.  Students will transfer dimensions from a set of plans to materials used to create
     project parts.

Student Activities
Due to the nature of the  materials in this type of class "Microsoft Publisher" was used instead
of some of the more complex and expensive drawing programs.  So you will need access to that
program as well as Microsoft Word, and Acroba Reader in order to view and print the worksheets
available through this website.                          -Ed Wilson

Introductory Activity:
The students can do a web search for the tools listed here.
The tools listed should either be sketched or cut and pasted to any available program
that can be printed. Pictures should be named on the drawing or the printout.
Tools should also bo introduced and presented to students by the instructor.
Grizzly Tools On-line Catalog-  Possible souce for identifying pictures of tools
Tool Identification Worksheet-  Students can cut and paste to this page or can print it
and sketch the tools on it for credit
Enabling Activity(ies):
     1.  Students are introduced to wood as a material. They are taught to
identify grain direction as it relates to the names of the parts of a board (face, edge
and end) and as it relates to the dimensions of a board.
     2.  Students are introduced to the tape measure and its features.
     3.  Students will practice measurement skills on blocks of wood of predetermined size
          and grain direction.

Culminating Activity:

  1.  Students transfer measurements from their cutting list to a piece of wood. (Note:
care was taken to write these performance objectives so they could be applied to
whatever project the instructor uses or has supplies to facilitate.
      2.  Students then take their material that has been marked to the machine tools that
have been pre-adjusted using stop blocks, jigs and/or fixtures.  After their cuts
have been made comparisons are made to their original marks as an evaluation of
           their accuracy.
      3.  Students will pass the post-test

Assessment

Pre-test: Print this out and administer this test to determine the current capabilities of the
student. Page one is for the student to complete, and page two is the answer key.

Post-test rubric: Criteria for completing the test.

Post-Test:  First page is the student test, and the second page is the answer key for the instructor.
