Introduction
This lesson will be an introduction to the novel Across Five Aprilswritten by  Irene Hunt.  After having completed this lesson, students will be familiar with the people, places and events referenced in the story and thereby be better able to  comprehend the story and the Civil War.

This Unit addresses the following California State Standards, from the approved California State Board of Education History-Social Science Standards.

Grade 8 

Social Studies
8.10.2 Trace the boundaries constituting the North and the South, the geographical differences between the two regions, and the differences between agrarians and industrialists. 
8.10.6.Describe critical developments and events in the war, including the major battles, geographical advantages and obstacles, technological advances, and General Lee's surrender at Appomattox.
 
8.10.7.Explain how the war affected combatants, civilians, the physical environment, and future warfare.

8.1.3 Use word meanings within the appropriate context and be able to verify those meanings by definition, restatement, example, comparison, or contrast.


Objectives

1. Given a list of battles of the Civil War, the student could be asked to order them chronologically. SS 8.10.6
2. Given a list of vocabulary words from the novel, the students could be asked to use them properly in a defining sentence. LA 8.1.3
3. Given a map of the United States, the student  could be asked to identify the free states, the slave states, and the border states. SS 8.10.2

Introductory Activity

2. An introduction to the characters in the book.
Enabling Activity(ies)
 
1. Given a map of the United States of 1861, students will distinguish between the Union States, the Confederate States, and the border states.
2. Students will make a facts sheet with an entry for each of the battles referred to in the book. A list of the battles will be given each student. Students will be given web sites from which to collect facts.
3. Students will make a facts sheet on each of  a list of  personages referred to in the book. Students will be given web sites from which to collect facts.
