Activities
Introductory
Activity
Students participate in a Think,
Pair, Share activity. First they think about what they know
about immigrants. Next they share their knowledge with their
partner. The teacher records student responses on an overhead as
students share them orally with the class. Students then
complete the first two columns of a Learning Log
containing the three headings "What I know", "What I
want to know", and "What I have learned".
Teaching/Learning
Activity
To have students understand some of
the emotions and decisions immigrants went through when leaving their
homeland the teacher shares their own "pillow case" of
5 belongings explaining that because of the cost and room most
immigrants could only carry one bag or pillow case of belongings with
them. Students then complete a Think Pair Share activity to
create their own Student Pillowcase. First
they write down the items they would take with them on a think pad
paper. Next they share their ideas with a partner. Ideas are
then shared with the group and recorded on the overhead.
Students may bring their pillowcase of items to class to share with
the group.
Teaching/Learning
Activity
Students view a laser disc on
immigrants (Immigrating to America Ch 3 Frame 08252) which shows
immigrants leaving their homeland, shares life aboard ship and the
Ellis Island "experience" . Students view the clothing, hear
the voice of a German immigrant tell her story, and see the bag/pillow
case of belongings immigrants carried with them. Students then
access the An
Immigrant Journey Museum fieldtrip and work through the activity.
Students keep track of important facts in their Trip Journal.
Culminating Activity
Students will utilize information
from all the activities they participated in to assist them in
completing one of the following:
-
Create a
journal portraying themselves as an immigrant. The journal
should include a minimum of 10 entries and include the country
they immigrated from, their reason for immigrating, their journey,
and life when they arrived in America.
-
Research a
famous immigrant and write a two page report. Their report
will include information on the country the person immigrated
from, the person's reason for immigrating, their journey, and the
life when they arrived in the United States.
-
Interview
a person who has immigrated to this country and write a two page
biography about this person and their immigration experience.
